I’m writing for a new fashion website Ramp1885.com which aims to give a voice to the world’s less well known fashion scenes. Only live a week or two, there’s already streetstyle from Yemen (featuring men with daggers at the belts), interviews with designers from Nicaragua and Australia, and a feature on Zagreb Fashion Week. One of my pieces - on Dublin’s vintage scene - is now on the Huffington Post, about which I am quite pleased.
So check us out - Ramp1885.com and on Facebook.

H&M Vienna on the Graben is palatial. Housed in a marble fronted, wooden inlayed building, with a beautiful creaking old lift, everything seems better quality and more lovely. Maybe they have a better selection than we have in Dublin, maybe not, either way it’s refreshing high street shopping experience.

Old shopfronts in Vienna.
Vienna is full of these strange specialised shops, shops that have stood in the same place for decades, with their original facades intact. There’s a lot of gold and black and wood. And some are designed by the finest architects, such as the river of gold on the Graben, by Adolf Loos. They make the streetscape so much more interesting than the homogenous slick brick and glass things lining so many city streets.

How to REALLY clean leather.
Now that the rain and the frost have descended upon us it’s time to start looking after all those leathery things again. If anyone knows how to look after leather it’s the horsey crowd. Grooms and riders have been saddle soaping and elbow greasing bridles, saddles, boots and harnesses for hundreds of years. Forget about shoe polish, it’s all about leather conditioners made by companies such as Carr&Day&Martin, Stubben and Absorbine. They’ve been making products to look after leather goods for hundreds of years. I’ve been lathering all my shoes and boots and bags in Absorine’s Horseman’s One Step lately to protect against water, dirt and grease but Stubben Hamanol and Renapur are also excellent especially if you want a good shine. The cobbler I go to is obsessed with Carr&Day&Martin’s Belvoir tack conditioner, and it’s probably the most reasonably priced of the lot.
Get them from the local equestrian supply store, or online. In Ireland try TRI Equestrian on The Curragh, Rhinestone in Ashford, Co. Wicklow, or Berney’s in Enniscorthy.

Swedish fashion behemoth H&M is to release a Girl with the Dragon Tattoo themed collection on December 14th. Trish Summerville, costume designer on the Hollywood remake of the best-selling Swedish thriller, has created the look for H&M in what might be one of the first spin off clothing lines - an ‘inspired by’ collection rather than a merchandise line. It’s all industrial, grungy, ripped denim and worn leather; slouchy hoodies and well-worn tees, dark colours and svelte silhouettes. Perfect for darting about city streets on covert businesses.
Get it first in Colette in Paris on November 28th.

An old bike that lives in an old churchyard in Wicklow. According to a sign on it it belonged to a man called Manus O’Donnell who used to cycle to Greystones and then take the train to town to work sometime in the middle of the last century.
The gravestone is from 1742, the lettering is beautiful and hand chiselled. The graveyard is full of these ancient graves, with suns and moons carved into them.
